Chasha’s small clan of bugbears was attacked by goblins and wiped out, except for him, a small child. He was taken prisoner and raised as a slave. (Which, as I understand goblin society, is how they treat anyone they have the power to, including other goblins.) He learned to avoid attention, and to steal food, but if he ever fought back physically they would beat him by weapons and sheer numbers.
He escaped by stealth when he was still a young teen in bugbear years, and then survived by his poor skills as a hunter, and more so by clubbing farmers’ sheep and stealing turnips. But this made him feel like a goblin, and eventually he made it to a city, where he lived by, well, he tried to make a living as a street performer juggling daggers, but often he fell back on petty crime.
Chasha has always been fascinated by magic, ever since he saw magical performers working the streets where he juggled. Many of them had no true magical skill, but used sleight of hand and minor alchemical tricks. (Chasha still is not really clear on the distinction.) He pestered them with questions, and was introduced to the alchemist who supplied many of these performers, an old gnomish woman known as Dame Hestia. Seeing his skill with his hands, and since her own were growing arthritic, she took him on as an apprentice. This was the happiest time in his life.
After several years, he became a journeyman alchemist, and moved to another city to start in business, with a street stall. (There may have been other reasons behind his leaving, if we like.) But he ran into trouble with the alchemists’ guild there
- anti-bugbear prejudice - and could only sell on the black market, which is a dangerous business. He fell back on part-time work as hired muscle, now with more explosions. He likes the jobs that take him out of the cities, where he still hasn’t grown comfortable.
